Registration: Registration starts at 6pm.

Dinner: Dinner will be served at 6.30pm. Presentation commence at 7pm with a break for tea/coffee and dessert.

Parking: Clarkes Point Reserve – parking meters $3.50 per hour from 8am to 8pm weekdays (max. $9 per day).

Introduction

Dr Jason Kaplan - Clinical Program Head, Cardiovascular and Respiratory Program

Dr Jason Kaplan studied Medicine at UNSW and graduated with Honours in 1999, then completed his internal medicine training at St George and Prince of Wales Hospitals and adult cardiology training at Royal Prince Alfred Hospital. His clinical interests include sports cardiology, integrative and preventative cardiology and cardiac imaging for minimally invasive cardiac procedures. Prior to training in cardiology, Dr Kaplan completed additional advanced training in medical oncology and pharmacology. His training in these areas allows Dr Kaplan to adopt a more holistic approach to patient care, particularly those with multiple medical issues. Dr Kaplan has also completed additional training in cardiac imaging in Australia and has spent time at the Mayo Clinic in Minnesota, USA. He performs transoesophageal echocardiography, pharmacological stress (dobutamine) echocardiography and has brought the use of contrast echo and strain imaging to Macquarie University Hospital. He is an accredited specialist in Cardiac CT and personally evaluates all his patients’ scans. Dr Kaplan is currently Clinical Lead of Cardiovascular and Respiratory Medicine at Macquarie University Health Sciences Centre and is a clinical lecturer in Medicine and Cardiology in the Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences teaching undergraduate and postgraduate students.

Professor Tristan Yan

Professor Tristan Yan is a Consultant Cardiothoracic Surgeon, Professor of Cardiovascular and Thoracic Surgery at Macquarie University Hospital and Clinical Professor of Surgery at the University of Sydney, Royal Prince Alfred Hospital and Sydney Adventist Hospital in Sydney, Australia. Professor Yan graduated from the University of New South Wales (UNSW) with Bachelor of Science (Medicine), Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery. He also completed three postgraduate higher degrees, Master of Surgery (USyd), Doctor of Medicine (UNSW) and Doctor of Philosophy (UNSW). He was trained at Royal Prince Alfred Hospital and St Vincent’s Hospital in Sydney and then obtained Cardiothoracic Surgery Fellowship from the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons. Following advanced specialty fellowships in the United States, England, Scotland and Germany, he specialises in minimally invasive cardiovascular surgery, and minimally invasive thoracic surgery. He has authored or co-authored more than 250 articles and textbook chapters, with an h-index of 41 and approximately 6,700 citations. He is the Chairman of the Collaborative Research (CORE) Group responsible for establishing and organizing the world’s largest multi-institutional Aortic ARCH Registry, consisting of more than 14,000 patients. He is also the founder and the Editor-in-Chief of the Annals of Cardiothoracic Surgery.

Dr Hari Raju - Cardiologist

Dr Hari Raju undertook over 10 years of training in cardiology before commencing in specialist practice as a Cardiologist and Electrophysiologist at Macquarie University Hospital, Sydney. He was first awarded his medical degree from University of Leeds (UK) in 2001. His subsequent extensive medical and cardiological training includes a PhD doctorate from St George's (University of London, UK) and 3.5 years of subspecialty clinical cardiac electrophysiology training at leading international institutions: St Thomas' Hospital (London, UK); St George's Hospital (London, UK); and Royal Melbourne Hospital (Australia). His mentors at these institutions include internationally-renowned electrophysiologists and world-class device specialists including Professors Mark O'Neill, C Aldo Rinaldi and Jon Kalman in addition to international expert consensus representatives for inherited primary arrhythmia syndromes, Dr Elijah Behr and Dr Jitendra Vohra.

His academic interest in sudden death and sports cardiology has been recognised by the international community and published in high-profile journals including the Journal of the American College of Cardiology. Moreover, he won the Young Investigator Award at Heart Rhythm Congress in 2013 for his research focusing on the genetics of sudden death. He personally performed specialist cardiac evaluation on over 2000 young individuals as part of the UK nationwide Cardiac Risk in the Young screening programme, which included pre-participation evaluation of the Great Britain 2012 Olympic team, Premiership football teams and other elite athletes. This expertise was recognised by his invitation to deliver a talk on bradycardia in athletes at the premier international cardiology conference: the European Society of Cardiology Congress in 2015.

Dr Walid Mohabbat - Vascular Surgeon

Dr Mohabbat is a vascular surgeon who completed training with the RACS and then spent two years in the Cleveland Clinic in the US in subspecialty training. He specialises in endovascular stent graft repairs for aortic aneurysms and dissections including fenestrated and branched repairs, carotid endarterectomy and carotid artery stenting. Lower extremity endovascular treatments include angioplasty, stenting, laser arthrectomy and endovenous laser ablation of varicose veins.

Dr Robin Gasiorowski - Haematologist

Dr Robin Gasiorowski completed medical training at Cambridge University and University College London before moving to Australia in 2004. Following specialist haematology training at Royal Prince Alfred and Concord hospitals he was appointed to a Staff Specialist position at Concord Hospital in 2014. He now works as a clinical and laboratory haematologist looking after a broad range of patients with both malignant and non-malignant haematological conditions. He has a particular interest in leukaemia and lymphoma and completed a PhD through Sydney University, developing novel antibody therapies for acute myeloid leukaemia. As a Senior Lecturer at both the University of Sydney and Macquarie University he is involved in training medical students and junior doctors at all stages of their careers. He also has a strong interest in clinical research, particularly in the development of novel immune therapies for patients with blood cancers.

Dr Jonathan Williamson

Dr Jonathan Williamson MBBS(Hons) PhD FRACP

Trained in Sydney, Perth and Heidelberg, Germany, Dr Williamson is a Respiratory and Sleep physician who commenced consulting at Macquarie University Hospital and Clinic in early 2012 as part of the Macquarie Respiratory and Sleep group. Dr Williamson’s practice covers a wide range of respiratory and sleep pathologies including asthma, COPD, lung and airway infections, sleep disorders and lung cancer. He developed an interest in interventional procedures whilst training at Royal North Shore Hospital and further developed this interest at St Vincents Hospital, Darlinghurst in the lung transplant unit, and at Sir Charles Gairdner Hospital, Perth completing a bronchoscopy-based PhD in 2010. Since returning to Sydney, Dr Williamson has been based at Liverpool Hospital where he is establishing an interventional bronchoscopy unit for advanced diagnostic and therapeutic airway procedures. Dr Williamson list of procedures includes endobronchial ultrasound, rigid bronchoscopy for management of central airway obstruction, YAG-laser, cryotherapy, argon plasma coagulation, endobronchial lung volume reduction for management of emphysema and airway stent insertion for palliation of obstructing lung tumours.
